Barbell Skier

From a half squat with the chest forward, straight arms lift a barbell held behind the legs back and up, like a skier driving the poles past the hips.

How to do it

Setup

Half squat, hips back, chest forward, a barbell held behind the legs in an overhand grip, arms straight.

Steps

  1. Lift the bar back and up behind you with straight arms.
  2. Stop when the arms are about level with the back, the squat unchanged.
  3. Lower the bar back to the legs slowly.

Common mistakes

Rising out of the half squat as the bar goes back: hold the depth and the chest angle. Bending the elbows into a row: keep the arms straight; the shoulders lift the bar. Rounding the back to lift higher: chest forward, back flat; less range.

Breathing

Exhale on the raise, inhale lowering.
