Barbell Lying Front Raise

The front raise lying on a flat bench, the bar lifted from the thighs to over the shoulders; the start is hardest.

How to do it

Setup

Face up on a flat bench, feet on the floor, bar on the thighs, overhand grip.

Steps

  1. Lift the bar off the thighs with straight arms.
  2. Raise it until the arms point straight up over the shoulders.
  3. Lower the bar slowly back onto the thighs.

Common mistakes

Bending the elbows to break the bar off the thighs: long arms. Lower back arching: feet planted, ribs down. Letting the bar drop back to the thighs: control the whole descent.

Breathing

Exhale on the raise, inhale lowering.
