Barbell Low Split Squat

The extra-long, low split squat with a bar across the upper back; the whole descent stays upright under the load.

How to do it

Setup

Bar across the upper back, feet an extra-long stride apart, rear heel up.

Steps

  1. Brace, then sink the hips straight down.
  2. Keep the bar over the middle of the stance.
  3. Drive up until the front leg is nearly straight.

Common mistakes

Bar pitching forward at the bottom: chest up, elbows under it. Wobbling: set the feet hip-width apart, not on one line. Sinking past control: stop where the torso stays upright.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale up.
