Barbell Incline Shoulder Raise

On an incline bench with the bar held at arm's length, only the shoulder blades move: they sink back to the bench, then drive the bar up a few centimeters as the shoulders leave it.

How to do it

Setup

Incline bench, the bar held at arm's length over the shoulders, grip shoulder-width, elbows locked.

Steps

  1. Let the shoulder blades sink back into the bench, arms straight.
  2. Push the bar toward the ceiling by lifting the shoulders off the bench.
  3. Pause, then lower the shoulders back under control.

Common mistakes

Bending the elbows: it turns into a press; they stay locked. Shrugging toward the ears: the shoulders reach toward the ceiling, not the head. Too much weight: the range is short; light and controlled.

Breathing

Exhale reaching up, inhale lowering.
