Barbell Half-Kneeling Shoulders Press

The overhead barbell press from half-kneeling, the bar racked on the front of the shoulders; the stance takes the legs out of the lift.

How to do it

Setup

Half-kneeling, the bar racked across the front of the shoulders, hands just outside shoulder-width.

Steps

  1. Squeeze the glute of the down leg and press the bar overhead.
  2. Draw the head back to let the bar pass, then bring it under the bar.
  3. Lower the bar to the front of the shoulders under control.

Common mistakes

Hauling the bar to the shoulders from the floor while kneeling: take it from a rack set low. Leaning back to clear the face: move the head, not the torso. Ribs flaring at lockout: brace and keep the hips square.

Breathing

Exhale on the press, inhale lowering.
