Barbell Clean Deadlift
A deadlift from the clean's start: hips low, shoulders over the bar, shoulder-width grip; the bar rises close to the legs to a tall finish with no shrug or jump.
How to do it
Setup
Bar over mid-foot, feet hip-width, grip just outside the legs, hips low, chest up, shoulders slightly ahead of the bar.
Steps
- Push the floor away, knees moving back as the bar rises.
- Keep the back angle constant until the bar passes the knees.
- Stand tall, then lower the bar the same way.
Common mistakes
Hips rising faster than the shoulders: the back angle holds until the knees are passed. Bar swinging out around the knees: sweep it in against the legs. Leaning back at the top: finish tall, not bent backward.
Breathing
Inhale at the bottom, exhale after lockout.
