Barbell Anderson Squat

The back squat started from the bottom: the bar rests on the rack's safety pins at squat depth and each rep begins by standing it up from a dead stop.

How to do it

Setup

Pins set at squat depth with the bar on them; squat under it, bar on the upper back, back flat, feet shoulder-width.

Steps

  1. Brace hard before the bar leaves the pins.
  2. Drive up to standing, chest and hips rising together.
  3. Lower the bar back onto the pins and let it settle before the next rep.

Common mistakes

Pins set too low: the start matches the depth of your own squat. Bouncing the bar off the pins: a full stop every rep. Hips shooting up first: chest and hips rise together.

Breathing

Inhale at the bottom, exhale after lockout.
