Barbell Bench Lateral Step-Up

The lateral step-up with a bar on the back, standing side-on to a bench; the load makes the side-on press harder for the working leg and the outer hip.

How to do it

Setup

Bar on the upper back, side-on to a flat bench, the near foot flat on it.

Steps

  1. Stand up sideways onto the bench, the bar level over the working hip.
  2. Bring the free foot up beside it.
  3. Step the free foot back down first, then the working one.

Common mistakes

Bar tipping toward the bench: keep the shoulders level as you rise. Hopping off the floor leg: pause with the free foot hovering before you rise. Bench too high to stand up straight on: use a lower one.

Breathing

Exhale stepping up, inhale down.
