Smith Machine Staggered-Stance Romanian Deadlift

The Smith machine Romanian deadlift in a staggered stance: the back foot's toes only balance, so the front leg does most of the hinge.

How to do it

Setup

Bar on the rails at the thighs, one foot a half step behind on its toes, most of the weight on the front foot.

Steps

  1. Hinge over the front leg as the bar runs down the rails.
  2. Keep the front knee soft and the hips square to the bar.
  3. Drive the front hip forward to lock out; finish the side, switch.

Common mistakes

Pushing through the back foot: it is a kickstand; the toes only touch. Hips twisting toward the back leg: square them to the bar. Standing so the rails pull you off the front foot: set up with the bar over the mid-foot.

Breathing

Inhale hinging, exhale standing.
