Skater Squat

On one leg with the other knee bent behind you, squat until that back knee kisses a pad, torso leaning forward for balance, and stand; the pistol's knee-friendly sibling.

Skater Squat, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Stand on one leg, the other knee bent behind you, a pad on the floor behind the standing heel, arms out front.

Steps

  1. Bend the standing knee and lean the torso forward for balance.
  2. Lower until the back knee kisses the pad.
  3. Stand up through the whole foot.

Common mistakes

Kneeling onto the pad: it is a target, not a rest; touch and go. Torso upright like a pistol: the lean is what keeps the shin vertical. Knee caving: track the toes.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale up.
