Dumbbell Full Swing

The dumbbell swing carried all the way overhead: the hip snap sends the bell up past the face to straight arms above the head.

How to do it

Setup

Feet shoulder-width, one dumbbell held by the handle in both hands, hinged with a flat back.

Steps

  1. Hike the dumbbell back between the thighs.
  2. Snap the hips and let the bell travel up past the face to straight arms overhead.
  3. Guide it back down through the same arc into the hinge.

Common mistakes

Arching the lower back under the bell overhead: ribs down, glutes tight at the top. Pulling it the last part with the arms: if the hips run out, stop at shoulder height. Bell drifting behind the head: finish with it over the shoulders.

Breathing

Sharp exhale on the hip snap, inhale on the backswing.
