Barbell Lateral Lunge

The lateral lunge with a bar across the upper back: step wide, sit into one hip, push back to center.

How to do it

Setup

Bar on the upper back, hands just outside the shoulders, feet together.

Steps

  1. Step out wide and sit back into the lead hip.
  2. Keep the trailing leg long, its foot flat.
  3. Drive back to center, bar level.

Common mistakes

Bar tilting as you shift: keep it level across the back. Knee shooting past the toes: sit the hips BACK. Torso folding over the knee: chest up against the bar.

Breathing

Inhale into the lunge, exhale pushing back.
