Barbell Decline Close-Grip to Skull Press

The JM-press path on a decline bench: the close-grip bar comes down toward the chin as the elbows fold forward, then presses back over the chest.

How to do it

Setup

Decline bench, legs hooked, a barbell over the chest in a close overhand grip, arms straight.

Steps

  1. Lower the bar toward the chin, the elbows bending deeply and pointing forward.
  2. Stop when the forearms fold against the upper arms.
  3. Press the bar back up over the chest.

Common mistakes

Letting the bar drift to the face: bring it toward the chin, under control. Elbows flaring out to the sides: keep them pointing forward. Going heavy without a spotter: the bar ends near the head; have one.

Breathing

Inhale lowering, exhale pressing.
