Dumbbell Step-Up Lunge

A forward lunge with the front foot landing on a bench, dumbbells at the sides; the raised front foot deepens the bend of the front hip and knee.

How to do it

Setup

Standing a long step behind a flat bench, a dumbbell hanging in each hand.

Steps

  1. Step the whole front foot onto the bench and sink the back knee toward the floor.
  2. Stay tall with the chest over the hips.
  3. Push off the front foot back to the start; alternate legs.

Common mistakes

Front foot landing half on the bench: step long enough to plant it whole. Back knee crashing to the floor: lower it under control. Bells swinging on the push back: keep them hanging still.

Breathing

Inhale into the lunge, exhale driving up.
