The preacher curl one arm at a time with a dumbbell.

Dumbbell Preacher Curl, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

One arm's triceps flat on the pad, bell hanging, other hand steadying.

Steps

  1. Curl the bell up until the forearm is vertical.
  2. Lower slowly all the way down the pad.
  3. Finish the arm's set, then switch.

Common mistakes

Elbow lifting at the top: glued to the pad. Dropping into the stretch: the bottom inch is where the preacher curl punishes the careless; slow there. Wrist curling to help: straight.

Breathing

Exhale on the curl, inhale lowering.
