Barbell Wide Shrug

The barbell shrug in front of the thighs with the hands set a hand's width or two outside the shoulders, wider than the usual shrug grip.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, bar at the front of the thighs, overhand grip a hand's width or two outside the shoulders.

Steps

  1. Lift the shoulders straight up, the bar rising along the thighs.
  2. Hold the squeeze at the top for a beat.
  3. Lower back to a long hang.

Common mistakes

Grip drifting in to shoulder-width: that is the standard shrug; keep the hands wide. Rolling the shoulders forward at the top: lift straight up, chest open. Jerking the bar with the knees: the legs stay still.

Breathing

Exhale on the shrug, inhale lowering.
