Barbell Sumo Romanian Deadlift
The Romanian deadlift from a wide, toes-out stance with the hands inside the knees; the wide feet bring the inner thighs in and let the torso stay a little more upright.
How to do it
Setup
Wide stance, toes turned out, bar at the thighs, grip shoulder-width inside the legs, knees soft.
Steps
- Push the hips back, bar sliding down the thighs, knees tracking over the toes.
- Stop at the stretch, bar near mid-shin, back flat.
- Push the hips forward to stand, the glutes finishing the lift.
Common mistakes
Knees caving on the way up: push them out over the toes. Squatting down instead of hinging: the knees keep their soft bend; the hips travel back. Stance so wide the hinge disappears: a little outside the shoulders is plenty.
Breathing
Inhale hinging, exhale standing.
