Barbell Split Squat

The split squat with a barbell hanging at arm's length in front of the thighs rather than on the back.

How to do it

Setup

Long split stance, a bar held overhand at arm's length before the thighs.

Steps

  1. Drop the back knee toward the floor, arms long.
  2. Keep the bar close and the torso upright.
  3. Stand, pressing through the front heel.

Common mistakes

Bar drifting forward on the way down: keep it brushing the thighs. Shoulders rounding under the load: blades back, chest up. Leaning over the front knee: sink straight down.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale up.
