Barbell Reverse Close-Grip Bench Press

The close-grip bench press held underhand, hands a little inside shoulder-width; the palms-up grip pins the elbows to the ribs.

How to do it

Setup

On the bench, palms toward the head, hands a little inside shoulder-width, thumbs wrapped.

Steps

  1. Take the bar with a spotter's hand-off; the grip makes unracking awkward.
  2. Bring the bar down to the lower chest, elbows along the ribs.
  3. Press back up and slightly toward the face.

Common mistakes

Thumbless grip: wrap the thumbs, since the bar can roll out underhand. Wrists bent back: stack them over the forearms. Bar touching high on the chest: it lands on the lower chest.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale pressing.
