Barbell Incline Close-Grip Bench Press

The close-grip bench press on an incline bench: the narrow grip sends the work to the triceps and the incline brings in the upper chest.

How to do it

Setup

Bench inclined, eyes under the bar, hands about shoulder-width, shoulder blades pinched into the pad.

Steps

  1. Unrack and hold the bar over the upper chest.
  2. Lower to the upper chest, elbows tucked close to the body.
  3. Press back up until the elbows lock.

Common mistakes

Hands too close together: shoulder-width is narrow enough and spares the wrists. Elbows flaring wide: tuck them to keep the triceps working. Bouncing off the chest: a light touch, then press.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale pressing.
