Clean Pull

The pull of a clean taken to full extension with a shrug, but no catch; heavier than the full lift.

Clean Pull, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Clean setup at the floor, hook grip, back flat.

Steps

  1. Drive the floor away as in a clean.
  2. Finish the hips violently and SHRUG tall.
  3. No catch – lower and reset.

Common mistakes

Bending the arms at the top: the pull ends at the shrug. Soft finish: this drill EXISTS for the violent extension. Loading past the clean's speed: heavy but fast; grinding pulls teach slowness.

Breathing

Breath at the floor, exhale at the shrug.
