Barbell Power Clean from Blocks

The power clean from blocks: the bar starts at about knee height from a dead stop and is caught above parallel.

How to do it

Setup

Bar on blocks at about knee height, hook grip, hips back, shoulders over the bar.

Steps

  1. Drive with the legs until the bar passes the knees, back angle unchanged.
  2. Snap the hips open and pull yourself under with fast elbows.
  3. Brake the catch ABOVE parallel, then stand and return the bar to the blocks.

Common mistakes

Sinking into a full squat on the catch: the power clean stops above parallel; brake hard. Hips rising before the shoulders: push with the legs and hold the back angle. Catching on the wrists with the elbows down: whip the elbows forward so the bar lands on the shoulders.

Breathing

Big breath at the blocks, exhale after the catch.
