Barbell Behind the Back Push Press
The push press started with the bar on the back of the shoulders instead of the front; the bar travels straight up past the back of the head.
How to do it
Setup
Bar on the upper back as for a back squat, jerk-width grip, feet hip-width, trunk braced.
Steps
- Dip straight down at the knees, the trunk angle unchanged.
- Drive up hard with the legs and push the bar straight up off the back.
- Lock out overhead, then lower the bar to the back under control.
Common mistakes
Leaning the chest forward in the dip: the trunk keeps its angle; the knees bend and the hips stay under. Rebending the knees to get under the bar: that is a push jerk; the legs drive once. Grinding through a pinch in the shoulder: behind the neck asks for mobility; if it hurts, press from the front.
Breathing
Inhale at the dip, exhale punching up.
